Epping

Epping, a suburb 18 km north of Melbourne’s central business district, is situated within the City of Whittlesea. With a population of 33,489 recorded in the 2021 census, Epping is bounded by Mill Park, Lalor, Somerton, and South Morang. Epping’s landscape features flat terrain with hills in the north providing scenic views of Melbourne. The suburb boasts facilities such as Pacific Epping shopping center and the Northern Hospital. Education options include St Monica’s College and Mill Park Secondary College, while Melbourne Polytechnic offers diverse courses at its Epping campus, including agriculture and renewable energy.

South Morang, a suburb situated 20 km northeast of Melbourne’s central business district within the City of Whittlesea, has experienced significant growth since the late 1990s, transforming from a rural area to a suburban landscape with new estates. Originally known as Morang South, its history dates back to the Wurundjeri balug and Wurundjeri Willam people. Today, South Morang is ethnically diverse, with a mix of ancestries, and boasts historical and cultural sites like Farm Vigano and Le Page Homestead. The Lakes South Morang P-9 School opened in 2007, and the suburb is well-connected with railway stations and bus routes. Sporting activities thrive, with the South Morang Cricket Club and the South Morang Football Club.

Wollert, a suburb positioned 26 km north of Melbourne’s central business district in the City of Whittlesea, derives its name from the Woiwurrung term meaning “where possums abound.” Historically, the area was dominated by sheep raising in the mid-19th century, with Summerhill farm, established by Thomas Wilson, gaining prominence. Notable landmarks include Australia’s largest brickmaker, Brickworks, and “The Christian Church in Melbourne,” which has its meeting hall at the site of the former Government school in Wollert. Today, Wollert is home to popular estates like Wollert Rise and Riverhills, managed by Dahua Group, and The Patch development at Bodycoats Road, overseen by Jinding property development.

Kalkallo, situated 31 km north of Melbourne’s Central Business District within the City of Hume, has a history rooted in the traditional lands of the Woiwurrung people. Originally a rural town with significant gold rush-era prosperity, the area experienced a decline in the 1870s due to transportation changes. Despite being historically undeveloped, Kalkallo has recently witnessed a surge in housing developments, including Merrifield, Cloverton, and Kallo, following the extension of Melbourne’s Urban Growth Boundary in 2010. These developments aim to accommodate the increasing population, with Merrifield planned as a mixed-use development offering jobs and homes for thousands.
